Devotees engaged in acts of merit including Buddhist rituals at pagodas and monasteries such as Shwedagon Pagoda, meditation at Dhamma centres, recitation of Buddhism treatises and alms-giving activities.
A releasing ceremony of 5,000 fingerlings was held at Kandawgyi Lake under the supervision of the Yangon Region Government. Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, regional ministers and officials released the fingerlings as an act of merit.
The Chief Minister and his team also visited the Maha Thingyan pavilions at People’s Square in Dagon Township and Kandawgyi Park, where they greeted festivalgoers, participated in water sprinkling and supported donors offering charity feasts. Civil servants and their families joined the offering of traditional meals and applying Thanaka to revellers.
At the Maha Bandoola Park near Yangon City Hall, citizens played water peacefully and young women proudly promoted Myanmar Thanaka traditions, aiming for recognition as an intangible cultural heritage.
