AS the Myanmar calendar transitioned from 1386 to 1387, people across Nay Pyi Taw began the New Year with traditional merit-making activities yesterday, reflecting the cultural practice of washing away the impurities of the old year both physically and spiritually.

The morning of Myanmar New Year’s Day saw crowds gather at pagodas and monasteries in Nay Pyi Taw Council Area to observe precepts, offer alms and perform acts of generosity. Activities included helping elderly people with personal hygiene, paying homage to parents and teachers, releasing fish and birds as a life-saving act and offering traditional New Year charity feast.

Government ministries, residential areas and Dhamma centres in Nay Pyi Taw also hosted monks to deliver Dhamma talks and blessing recitations. These ceremonies were accompanied by the sharing of merit, setting a wholesome and auspicious beginning to the new year.
