Lend a helping hand to people with disabilities

MYANMAR’S constitution guarantees equal rights for all citizens, including those with disabilities. It emphasizes that people with disabilities can showcase their talents and skills in various sectors, just like their able-bodied counterparts. In Myanmar society, discrimination against people with disabilities is uncommon, and there is a strong tradition of lending a helping hand to those in need. This supportive attitude is deeply rooted in the teachings of various religions, fostering a culture of peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths.

On 18 March 2024, Myanmar reconstituted the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) to strengthen the protection and promotion of the rights of people with disabilities. This committee plays a crucial role in implementing the Five-Year Strategic Plan of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2022-2027), approved on 15 February 2024. The strategic plan outlines specific actions to be taken across different sectors to ensure that the rights of people with disabilities are upheld.

The government has formed task forces comprising officials from various ministries and organizations. These task forces are responsible for developing standard operating procedures for registering organizations that support people with disabilities. The registration and grading of disabilities are currently being carried out in 18 selected townships, with plans to expand to six more areas. This initiative aims to collect accurate data on people with disabilities.

Furthermore, the government is planning to continue providing cash assistance to registered people with disabilities. Additionally, 29 special private schools and units are being established nationwide to offer educational opportunities for children with disabilities. These schools are crucial for the overall development of these children. The government, along with private charitable organizations, is encouraged to support these special schools to ensure they have the resources needed to fulfil their mission.

Myanmar is making significant strides in supporting people with disabilities through legal frameworks, strategic planning, and the establishment of special educational institutions. The collective efforts of government bodies, organizations, and society at large are essential in ensuring that people with disabilities have equal opportunities to thrive in all aspects of life.

Myanmar society does not set aside people with disabilities. On the other hand, eminent persons with disabilities are serving the interests of the nation and the nationals. As all Myanmar people have been living in the country through thick and thin, sharing the same future, anybody should not consider discrimination against people with disabilities and needs to give a helping hand to those persons with compassion.
