The 2024 Tazaungdaing Hot Air Balloon Festival in Taunggyi, Shan State (South), officially began with an impressive opening ceremony on 11 November at 4:30 pm at the Awayar Hot-Air Balloon Ground. Amid serene, mist-covered mountains and the season’s cool weather, the event infused vibrant festivities into the region.
Officials commenced the event with a floral and light offering at the Culamuni Pagoda, followed by the release of a giant Seinnapan hot-air balloon in dedication. Traditional Shan music, contemporary songs, and performances by local artistes added to the festivities. Shan State Chief Minister U Aung Aung, along with state government officials, then inaugurated the event by cutting the ribbon.
The festival will run for seven days from 11 to 17 November, featuring traditional activities such as candlelight offerings, and large hot-air balloon competitions. This year’s event includes a variety of balloon contests: 147 two-legged balloons, 40 four-legged balloons, 22 figure-shaped balloons, 26 giant night-launch balloons, and 24 Seinnapan balloons. The chief minister expressed his hope that the Tazaungdine Festival would continue to promote unity among ethnic groups and preserve Myanmar’s cultural heritage.
Following the official opening, the festival continued with the launch of a giant Seinnapan balloon and displays of over 50 medium-sized balloons. Thousands of students released over 300 small hot-air balloons, accompanied by fireworks. Renowned singer Hein Ko performed his award-winning song of 2019 Tazaungdine, and cultural dance troupes entertained the crowd.
