UNION Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win attended the ceremony marking 2024 World Diabetes Day in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
Speaking at the event, the Union minister said diabetes is a major factor in causing premature death, and at least one in ten is suffering from diabetes in the world. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) projects that diabetes will increase in the coming years.
The theme for World Diabetes Day 2024 is “Empowering Global Health”. This year, the focus emphasizes improving global access to diabetes education, resources, and healthcare solutions, and encouraging some amazing interactions between experts and people around the globe.
The ministry also opens clinics for diagnosis of diabetes and high blood pressure at rural health centres every Wednesday and provides the patients with basic medicines and medical supplies. There are 7,516 clinics now, and the Centres of Excellence for Diabetes are established to offer quality treatment, prevent the complications of diabetes and raise health awareness regarding diabetes, at four general hospitals in Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, and Magway.
Then, the Union minister observed the booths displayed at the ceremony.
Departments under the Ministry of Health conducted health check programmes for diabetes patients at Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (1,000-bed) yesterday morning, hailing and honouring World Diabetes Day.
