A workshop on Optimizing Myanmar’s Role in ASEAN was conducted at the Lawkanat Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 9-10 January 2025.

At the workshop, U Ko Ko Kyaw, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs delivered an opening remark highlighting Myanmar’s active participation in regional, sub-regional and international organizations, including the United Nations, ASEAN, BIMSTEC and Mekong Sub-regional Organizations, the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in line with Myanmar’s independent, active and non-aligned foreign policy. He further emphasized the importance of mutually beneficial cooperation of the bilateral, regional and multilateral platforms through the intensified efforts fostering vigorous foreign relations to advance the national, political, economic, and social objectives of the country. He encouraged all participants from relevant ministries to identify priority areas to optimize Myanmar’s cooperation in ASEAN by consolidating the network among relevant bodies so that the national priorities and action plans are synchronized with ASEAN-led mechanisms.

In the high-level segment of the workshop, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ko Ko Kyaw, Deputy Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Dr Wah Wah Maung and senior officials from the respective ministries of the three ASEAN Community Pillars shared their views on Myanmar’s cooperation with ASEAN and encouraged the line ministries to analyze the national projects be aligned with the ASEAN frameworks and to ensure national priorities effectively complete works in ASEAN. They also highlighted Myanmar’s constructive contribution in crafting the ASEAN Community Vision (ACV) 2045 and urged the relevant ministries to closely coordinate for the successful realization of the national priorities while implementing the Strategic Plans of the ACV 2045.

The two-day workshop was attended by around 85 government senior officials and personnel representing 30 ministries of the three ASEAN Community Pillars. — MNA
