A total of 11 solar power plant projects are currently under construction and development across Myanmar, with an installed capacity of 1,026 megawatts, according to the Electricity and Energy Development Commission.
Among these, four projects are being built in the Union Territory of Nay Pyi Taw, three in Mandalay Region, one in Bago Region, and one in Shan State, collectively contributing 530 megawatts. Hybrid (Gas Engine + Solar) projects are underway in Mandalay Region and Magway Region, with a combined installed capacity of 496 megawatts.
Given the increasing national electricity demand, the government is expediting renewable energy projects to boost power production. Currently, Myanmar operates 28 hydropower plants, 27 thermal power plants, and eight solar power plants, with a total installed capacity of 6,371 megawatts. However, electricity production has declined due to damage to power lines from attacks and natural disasters.
The Electricity and Energy Development Commission aims to prioritize the development of electricity and energy infrastructure to support daily livelihoods and economic growth, with local and international investments.
