The government will allow import of coal as an industrial raw material in order to enhance productivity of cement plants at home. As import of coal will be allowed starting from this month, businesspersons from cement plants which need coal can apply for import licence.
Currently, construction projects are being accelerated across the nation in the dry season, and import of industrial raw coal will be allowed to operate domestic cement plants at full capacity so as to meet local demand while the government allows import of cement through border trade process.
A total of 19 cement plants comprising 16 private-owned and three State-run plants throughout the country require operating production at full capacity. The entire country needs more than 10 million tonnes of cement yearly. As domestic cement plants produce less than eight million tonnes of cement per year. So, the country needs more than 500,000 bags of cement per day.
