The 83rd kidney transplant was successfully performed at the Mandalay General Hospital on 20 February.

The recipient of the operation was a 26-year-old male nurse from Pyigyidagun township of Mandalay, with his 26-year-old wife as the donor. The surgery commenced at 9:22 am and concluded at 2:45 pm.

The kidney recipient and the donor were in good condition and under medical care at the intensive care unit. The successful completion of the renal transplant operation was conducted with the participation of urine and renal treatment group led by Professor Dr Ko Ko Naing and Professor Dr Win Win Hlaing, urine and renal surgery group by Professor Dr La Min Win and Professor Dr Kyaw Soe Kyaw, heart and cardiovascular surgery group by Professor Dr Win Win Kyaw and Specialist Dr Thadoe Thein Zan, anaesthesia group by Dr Mi Mi Thaw and Professor Dr Mu Mu Naing, diagnosis and blood group by University of Medicine (Mandalay) Rector Professor Dr Myo Thet Tin and Professor Dr Nilar Win, X-ray group by Professor Dr Thandar Lwin, Superintendent Dr San Lwin Oo and hospital management committee members, nurses and skilled medics.

Deputy Minister for Health Dr Aye Tun encouraged the patient and the donor on 23 February and appreciated the efforts of the medics who performed the surgery.

The renal transplant operation was conducted at the Mandalay General Hospital in 2001, and the 82nd operation was performed in March 2020. The operations were suspended temporarily due to the outbreak of COVID-19, and the hospital resumed its 83rd operation. Kidney transplant operation is performed at public hospitals such as Yangon Speciality Hospital (500-bed), Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (1,000-bed) and Mandalay General Hospital, while the Defence Services Hospitals such as No 1 Defence Services Hospital (1,000-bed) in Yangon, No 2 Defence Services Hospital (1,000-bed) in Nay Pyi Taw, No 1 Defence Services Hospital (700-bed) in Pyin Oo Lwin and No 2 Defence Services Hospital (700-bed) in Aungban, and private hospitals such as Pan Hlaing and Kanthaya hospitals in Yangon.
