Authorities have detained further 161 foreign nationals: 158 Chinese and three Indonesians who illegally entered Myanmar via land borders, including those who passed through neighbouring countries such as Thailand.
These individuals were involved in online gambling, online fraud and other criminal activities in Myawady’s Maethawtalay and KK Park areas. Officials are now verifying their records and preparing for their repatriation as soon as possible.
Kayin State Security and Border Affairs Minister Colonel Min Thu Kyaw and other officials inspected the detention conditions and the verification process for the newly detained individuals yesterday morning. They also met relevant authorities to ensure accurate record-keeping and smooth repatriation procedures without delays.
From 30 January to 15 March 2025, authorities have detained a total of 6,436 illegal foreign entrants. Of these, 3,588 have already been repatriated via Thailand following legal procedures, while 2,848 remain in custody, awaiting transfer to their respective countries.
The government remains committed to combating online gambling, online fraud and cross-border crimes in Myanmar’s border regions. In collaboration with international organizations and local communities, efforts will continue to crack down on these illegal activities and hold offenders accountable.
