IN collaboration with neighbouring countries and international organizations, the government of Myanmar is taking decisive and effective action to combat online gambling and telecom fraud activities in the country’s border regions.

As part of these efforts, authorities yesterday identified and detained 163 Chinese nationals who had illegally entered Myanmar through some neighbouring countries including Thailand, and were engaged in online gambling and fraud activities in Maehtawthalay, and KK Park areas of Myawady in Kayin State. Kayin State Minister for Security and Border Affairs Colonel Min Thu Kyaw and officials inspected the verification process of their personal records and made necessary suggestions to expedite their repatriation to their respective countries.

During the period between 30 January and 16 March 2025, a total of 6,599 foreign nationals who had entered Myanmar illegally were apprehended. Among them, 3,588 individuals have already been repatriated to their respective countries via Thailand in accordance with due legal procedures. The remaining 3,011 foreign nationals are now ready for repatriation, and they are being well cared for in the meantime.

The detained foreign nationals include individuals from China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Pakistan, India, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nepal, Thailand, Japan, Rwanda, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Ghana, Bangladesh, and Chinese (Taipei). The majority of those detained are Chinese nationals.
