UNION Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win discussed with the medical superintendent of the 500-bed Yangon Specialty Hospital, professor/department head of respective subjects, specialists, retired medics and health workers in detail to re­sume the kidney transplant op­eration, which was suspended in February 2020 for the outbreak of COVID-19, to mark Diamond Ju­bilee Independence Day which falls on 4 January 2023.

On 29 November, the 500- bed Yangon Specialty Hospital successfully resumed the renal transplant operation under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, Medical Services De­partment and relevant medics. Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, Director-General of the Medical Services Depart­ment Dr Myat Wunna Soe, Rec­tor of Yangon General Hospital (medical superintendent/treat­ment) Dr Thida Hla and officials watched the operation processes and comforted the patient and families. The Yangon Region chief minister donated K1 million to the patient and provided K5 million to health workers.

On the morning of 29 No­vember, the medics performed the operation on two sisters– pa­tient Ma Khin Nyo Nyo Htwe and donor Ma Thin Pyae Pyae Moe. It was completed at noon and the kidney recipient and donor were in good condition and un­der medical care at the intensive care unit.

The operation was con­ducted by the medical units led by Prof/department head (urine and renal surgery) Prof Dr Kyaw Soe Kyaw of 500-bed Yangon Specialty Hospital, Prof/ department head (urine and re­nal treatment) Prof Dr Win Win Hlaing, Prof/department head (Anesthesia) Prof Dr Mu Mu Naing, Prof/department head (X-ray) Prof Dr Aung Cho Tun, Deputy Director-General Dr Thida Aung of National Blood Centre (Yangon), Director (Pa­thology) Dr Swe Sett of National Health Laboratory (Yangon) and veteran retired medics Prof Dr Than Aye, Prof Dr Kyaw Swar Hlaing, Prof Dr Phone Myint, Prof Dr Khin Maung Htay, Prof Dr Kyi Kyi San, skilled nurses, Medical Superintendent Dr Aung Lin Aye of 500-bed Yangon Spe­cialty Hospital and with the coop­eration of hospital management committee members.

The hospital was established in 2014 and since then, it conduct­ed 54 kidney transplant opera­tions: four times in 2014 while 10 in 2015 and 2016 respectively, nine times each in 2017 and 2018, 10 times in 2019, two times in Feb­ruary 2020 and the last one is the 55th operation.
