IT is necessary to work together for doubling the production of fish and shrimp farming to replenish the decreasing fish resources ensuring adequate nutritious fish for local consumption, said Dr Aung Gyi, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

He made that remark at his meeting with officials of the Myanmar Fisheries Federation in Insein Township of Yangon on 19 August.

During the meeting, he also underscored that the businessmen should strictly comply with the safety of consumers and the quality of exports, to ensure not to affect the environment and extend the scope of good aquaculture (GAqP) practices.

Moreover, all should cooperate in preventing harmful fishing techniques that affect the ecosystem including illegal fishing and destruction of water resources.

He then proceeded to a factory of Eastern Power International Ltd in Insein Township to inspect the storage processes and export of fish and shrimp.

Myanmar produced 1509.16 tonnes of freshwater and saltwater fish and shrimp in April 2022-July 2023 with 322.69 tonnes by fish farms, 39.67 tonnes by collective fish farms, 235.72 tonnes by open fishery and 918.08 tonnes by saltwater fishery.
