THE Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister for Construction U Myo Thant met the Chinese Minister for Housing and Urban-Rural Development and party yesterday in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

They exchanged views on effective cooperation between the two countries in housing, urban and rural development, the Belt and Road Initiative-BRI, China – Myanmar Economic Corridor-CMEC and infrastructure development.

In the China-ASEAN Ministerial Roundtable on Construction meeting, the Union minister said in his speech that the objective of the meeting is to highlight the importance of construction works and related things as the theme of the meeting is to be transparent, cooperate for mutual benefit and share new opportunities for China and ASEAN in the construction sector.

The Union minister also remarked that the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) is one of the important parts of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and it may contribute to regional economic development as well as improved linkage between infrastructures while attracting investments.

He also highlighted the fact that the International Land-Sea Trade Corridor — ILSTC, an important route, will connect the Southeast Asian areas to the southwest of China after passing Myanmar.

He then noted that the construction sector plays a key role in implementing projects of modern transportation networks, durable civil planning and housing. China-ASEAN cooperation will bring mutual benefits while investment in infrastructure projects is essential to improve connectivity within the region as well as to benefit the China-ASEAN strategic cooperation.

In conclusion, the Union minister urged the meeting to keep sustainable development, to develop environmentally friendly infrastructures and to share practices and technologies with ASEAN countries in conducting developmental measures within the bloc.

At the meeting, ministers and officials from China and ASEAN countries discussed matters pertaining to the strategic prospects of China-ASEAN cooperation, investments in infrastructure projects, and research and technological developments.
