THE Shared River, Shared Future and the Role of Journalists under the Mekong-Lancang media development programme for MLC (Mekong-Lancang Cooperation) journalists was held in Cambodia yesterday.

The Cambodian government initiated the programme: Role of Journalists on the Shared River and Shared Future in 2022 with the help of the Chinese government as the role of journalists plays a key role in ensuring the regional peace, prosperity and sustainable development of MLC.

During the event, Cambodian Information Minister Mr Neth Pheaktra said, "Media is a key and explores the social, economy, culture and accurate regional situation. All the media outlets in addition to the conservative media should cover the news as per the media ethic as the online media becomes widespread. The current programme will support the Mekong-Lancang media development and quality of journalism."

Similarly, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Mr Wu Chuanbing and Director-General of INB Mr Phos Sovann and the secretary-general of the Ministry of Information of Cambodia made remarks respectively.

Then, adviser to the Ministry of Information Prof Moeun Chhean and a representative of Sihanouk Province discussed different topics and international journalists, Cambodian media outlets and MLC correspondents raised questions.

The journalists also visited industrial zones and observed the tire production procedures of General Tyres Technology company.

Thailand put forward an initiative to narrow the development gap and ensure sustainable development of the Mekong sub-regions at the 17th ASEAN-China Summit held in Nay Pyi Taw in November 2014. Following that announcement, China proposed an initiative for Mekong-Lancang Cooperation including Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The MLC focuses on three cooperation pillars, namely public policy and security, economic and sustainable development, and social, cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
