UNION Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture U Tin Oo Lwin received Mr Abhay Thakur, Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.

They discussed enhancing cooperation in religious and cultural sectors based on the long-standing friendship between the two countries. They agreed to strengthen collaboration in areas such as the exchange of scholars, with plans to annually send two postgraduate students from Myanmar’s Department of Archaeology and National Museum to study a diploma course at the Field School of Archaeology run by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Additionally, two students will be accepted annually into a master’s programme in museum studies. In the field of Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science, two students from the Myanmar Institute of Information Technology (MIIT) will be selected each year to pursue a master’s degree in India.

They also discussed the ongoing restoration work on the Bagan pagodas by the ASI, with a goal to complete the project by 2028 as initially planned. Furthermore, both sides shared open views on promoting pilgrimage tours, including the famous Bodh Gaya pilgrimage, to enhance religious and cultural ties further.
