The Ministry of Construction and the Directorate of Military Engineers must cooperate in the recruitment of skilled carpenters and labourers to renovate and rebuild the houses to be completed before raining season.

Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing made a tour of inspection in the Inlay region affected by the Mandalay earthquake and comforted residents.

Accompanied by Council Joint Secretary General Ye Win Oo, council members, Union ministers, the chief minister of Shan State, senior Tatmadaw officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief, the commander of Eastern Command and officials, the Senior General asked about damage to residential houses in Kayla Village-tract of Nyaungshwe Township yesterday and instructed officials to soonest repair the damaged houses and rebuild necessary houses.

The chief minister of Shan State and officials reported to the Senior General on the loss of lives in the incident of Mandalay earthquake in Nyaungshwe Township, loss and damage to pagodas and residential houses, and requirements of timber and corrugated iron sheets for house reconstruction.

Salient points from the speech delivered by the Senior General on his trip to the Inlay region

  1. Everyone must work together in unity and harmony, without discrimination between the hills and the plains in carrying out the tasks of national reconstruction.
  2. A station hospital will be built there to ensure a smooth process of healthcare services for the people.
  3. The government will provide K1 million each to dead persons and cash assistance for damaged houses.

In his instruction, the Senior General said that the Ministry of Construction and the Directorate of Military Engineers under the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) have to cooperate in the recruitment of skilled carpenters and labourers to renovate and rebuild the houses to be completed before raining season. He pledged to provide adequate timber, CI sheets and cement for the construction of buildings. A plan is underway to issue foodstuffs for earthquake-affected people for one month, and a station hospital will be built there to ensure a smooth process of healthcare services for the people.

The Senior General unveiled that the data collected this morning amounted to 3,675 dead, 5,020 injured and 141 missing. The government will provide K1 million each to dead persons and cash assistance for damaged houses.

He noted that it has already been instructed that buildings constructed from now on must be able to withstand at least a Richter scale magnitude of 8 to prevent such destruction from happening in the future.

He underscored that everyone must work together in unity and harmony, without discrimination between the hills and the plains in carrying out the tasks of national reconstruction.

Regarding education, he stated that efforts are being made as quickly as possible to repair and reopen the basic education schools that were damaged by the earthquake before the start of the new school term. It was also emphasized that collective efforts must be made to ensure all school-aged children have access to education.
The Senior General presented foodstuffs and cash assistance for quake victims through officials and gave cash awards to rescue teams.

The Senior General inspected the loss and damage to religious buildings at the Inlay PhaungdawU Pagoda and instructed officials to provide necessary construction materials for maintenance of the main chamber of the pagoda. He stressed the need to build sheet piles at the landscape areas of the retaining wall caused by the earthquake.

During his trip, the Senior General offered gold foils to the pagoda and presented cash donations to the fund of the pagoda.

The Senior General also presented cash awards to members of the Myanmar Police Force and firefighters who participate in rescue and relief operations.
