Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing yesterday met district-level officials and town elders at Athinkhaya Hall in Sagaing and at the office of the Mandalay Region government in Mandalay separately to talk about rehabilitation for loss and damage to the regions in the earthquake.
Speaking on the occasion, the Senior General explained that due to the Mandalay earthquake, pagodas, monasteries, residential buildings, and bridges were damaged. The Sagaing (Inwa) Bridge also suffered damage. To ensure smooth waterway transport, plans are underway to remove some collapsed iron frames from the bridge before the rainy season. Efforts will also be made to reconstruct the bridge.
He revealed that for construction projects, the government will sell necessary materials such as cement, iron, and zinc at appropriate prices.
The Senior General pledged that financial support would also be provided for damaged residential houses, with assistance given based on the type of house and at suitable rates.
In carrying out urban reconstruction activities, he underscored that the town plans must be systematically redesigned in the rehabilitation process, and efforts will be made for the overall benefit of the city.
The Senior General noted that it is necessary to construct buildings and bridges that must withstand up to magnitude 8 on the Richter scale, the highest level of seismic activity previously experienced in the country.
Meanwhile, he stressed that efforts must be made to increase agricultural and livestock products as well as MSME products. River water pumping stations must be operated through solar energy in order to sufficiently irrigate agricultural tasks.
The government has announced plans to expedite the reconstruction of schools damaged by the earthquake. Likewise, a plan is underway to upgrade Sagaing General Hospital (200-bed) to a 300-bed facility while the 700th Anniversary sports ground of Sagaing will be improved into a modern stadium.
The Senior General presented K50 billion to be spent on the rehabilitation in Sagaing Region to the Sagain Region Chief Minister and K60 billion for Mandalay Region to a town elder.
Town elders reported on the requirement of necessary machinery for clearing debris. The Senior General fulfilled the needs. After the ceremony, the Senior General cordially greeted town elders and officials.
