The combined teams conducted surprise checks at cement shops in Yangon, Mandalay, Bago and Sagaing regions and Shan State on 23 April, to curb the high cement prices in the market as the demand was high after the Mandalay earthquake that struck on 28 March.
The teams inspected the 59 construction material shops and one warehouse in eight townships in Nay Pyi Taw Council, 87 shops and three companies in 34 townships of Yangon Region, 88 shops in 11 townships of Mandalay Region, four shops in Sagaing of Sagaing Region, 19 shops in three townships of Bago Region, 59 shops in three townships of Shan State, totalling 320 shops. Among them, it was found that 30 shops sold the products with profits of 10 to 15 per cent, 32 shops made profits of 15 per cent and above, and the Pyae Sone Aung construction material shop that opened in Yadana Thiri ward in Taunggyi used various malicious methods. Therefore, officials take action against eight offenders, including Soe Tint Aung, owner of Pyae Sone Aung construction material shop. Further investigations are underway.
