AN opening ceremony for the Thanlyin-Thilawa Road Extension Project was held at the near-by Thanlyin Bridge in Thanlyin Township yesterday morning.

The ceremony was attended by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, Hluttaw Speaker U Tin Maung Tun of Yangon Region, Deputy Minister Dr Kyaw Lin of the Ministry of Construction, Japanese Ambassador Mr Ichiro Maruyama, Japanese Deputy Minister Mr Yamada Kunihiro of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), JICA Resident Representative Mr Karazawa, the Yangon Region cabinet members, the Hluttaw representatives, the departmental officials, town elders and local people among others.

Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein spoke on the occasion that Thanlyin is the most developed and successful economic and industrial zone outside the Yangon metropolitan area. The infrastructure development is required to the advancement of economic zones. The road ex-tension project was undertaken with the help of Japan JICA ODA Loan. Technical transfers were received from the Japanese con-tractors as they constructed the road by using high technologies. Therefore, it is necessary to take an exemplary road of international standards for the roads to be constructed in the future. Thanlyin, which has an exit to the sea, will be more developed after completion of the road. Thanlyin becomes economically strong as the transportation of goods is in 24-hour operation along the Thanlyin-Thilawa Road and thereby it can enhance the development of its neighbouring towns like Kyauktan, Khayan, and Thonegwa as well as Yangon. He called for the local people to maintain and sustain the road. He concluded the event by expressing thanks to the JICA, the Ministry of Construction, both Japanese and Myanmar companies, relevant ministries, the Yangon City Development Committee and local residents.

Next, Japanese Ambassador Mr Ichiro Maruyama, Deputy Minister Dr Kyaw Lin of the Ministry of Construction and Japanese MLIT Deputy Minister Mr Yamada Kunihiro gave their remarks. Then, a local resident gave a congratulatory speech and four town elders and 5 out-standing students cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the road.

The Yangon Region Chief Minister, the Yangon Region Hluttaw Speaker, the Japanese Ambassador, the Deputy Minis-ter of the Ministry of Construction, the Japanese MLIT Deputy Minister, the JICA Myanmar Office Resident Representative, and the Yangon Region Industry, Electricity and Transportation Minister pressed the button and spread the scented water on the stone monumental plaque.
