THE National Renewable Energy Committee organized its 3rd coordination meeting (1/2020) in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
Chairman of the committee and Union Minister for Electricity and Energy U Win Khaing, its deputy Chairmen Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Thu and Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi; and committee members.
Union Minister U Win Khaing discussed promotion of renewable energy sector, its resources, raising awareness on energy saving through increasing electricity bill beginning 1 July 2019 and more interesting investors in electricity generation from hydro and thermal powers.
The Union Minister added the government is implementing a long-term plan to be able to generate 500 MW from hydropower projects in the next three years.
In short-term plan, a total of seven thermal power plants could produce 1,166 MW soon.
The proposed projects include 61 solar power projects in eight regions and state for 5,746.37 MW; 7 wind power projects in 4 regions for 1,163 MW and 6 biomass project for 200 MW in 4 regions and states.
Myanmar is also promoting renewable energies to support the 2021 Energy Mix in relation to nationwide electrification programme targeted in 2030.
The ministry has expected 100 per cent electrification rate for Yangon Region, and plans are also underway to distribute electricity to the remote areas such as Myawady, Kawkareik and Hpa-an soon. Power will also reach to Mongpyin, Kengtung, Kalay and Mawlaik through 230 kV line in near future. The Ye-Dawei power line will soon be constructed.
Senior officers from the departments of ministry discussed electricity generations from renewable sources. Electricity distribution of Myanmar was 34 per cent in 2016, and has increased to 50 per cent in December 2019.
The National Renewable Energy Committee is implementing the target of 55 per cent this year as a part of plan for nationwide coverage in 2030.
