The national-level committee for implementing recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) held its third coordination meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
Vice President U Myint Swe, in his capacity as the chairman of the committee, presided over the meeting, and called for finalizing the committee’s draft report in the first week of May so that it can be submitted to the meeting of UPR’s working group which is scheduled to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 2 to 13 November this year.
He added Myanmar received 166 recommendations for UPR, and the line ministries were implementing 12 sectors involved in these recommendations.
The Vice President appreciated the implementations of 9 resolutions made at the national-level committee’s 2nd coordination meeting on 30 May last year.
Relevant ministries and agencies involved in the implementation process are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, the Ministry of International Cooperation, the Union Attorney-General Office, the Ministry of Union Government Office, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture, the Ministry of Office of the State Counsellor, the Ministry of Planning, Finance and Industry and the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population.
These national-level bodies have implemented a total of 62 tasks, out of 166 resolutions, regarding human right situations, peace, rule of law, implementation of good governance, land confiscation cases, promotion of gender equality, health and education, interfaith harmony, freedom of demonstration and peaceful gatherings, ceasefire and national reconciliation, economic development, national identification processes, internationally displaced persons and trafficking in human cases.
The Vice President also called for the coordination of the relevant bodies to finalize the Myanmar language draft in the second week of April and its English version in the first week of May.
He emphasized the need to clear groundless accusations of the international community against Myanmar in human rights issues.
Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Major General Aung Thu, secretary of the committee, presented the completion status of resolutions in the first and second coordination meetings of the national-level committee.
Union Attorney-General U Tun Tun Oo, chairman of the report writing work committee, briefed on preparations made by his work committee.
Union Ministers U Kyaw Tin and Dr Win Myat Aye, Chairman of Myanmar National Human Rights Commission U Hla Myint, Deputy Minister Major General Aung Thu, Chief of Myanmar Police Force Police Lt-Gen Aung Win Oo, Permanent Secretary of UAGO Dr Thida Oo and Director-General of Anti-Corruption Commission U Htin Kyaw discussed the draft report.
The Vice President gave advice and comments to ensure coordination based on the discussions before concluding the meeting.
