The Agriculture and Livestock Development Commission organized its first meeting yesterday.
Speaking at the event, Commission Chair General Nyo Saw highlighted the objectives of the formation of the commission, and the need to assign duties based on these objectives, draft policies for agriculture and livestock development, promote export volumes by increasing the production rate, local and foreign investment in agricultural sector, and sector-wise efforts to promote investment and economy ensuring agribusiness.

He then stressed the role of agriculture and livestock in the country, efforts to be a nation with an agro-based industry and the research to grab cultivation targets.

He added that Myanmar has about three million and 15 million summer and monsoon paddy, respectively, totalling 18 million acres of paddy fields. There might be over 30 million acres per year when the double-crop system is improved. Moreover, the paddy production rate will be 200 per cent and it can ensure rice security and an increase in the export sector.

He also instructed the need to develop the agriculture and livestock sectors fulfilling the crop targets and changing to an intensive cut and carry system from the traditional breeding system. He also talked about the upgrading of existing breeding zones systematically and the establishment of new zones.

He urged the ministries concerned to work together to produce value-added products, prepare solar energy ensure access to electricity for the MSMEs, and enhance the cooperation among government, private and public to develop the MSMEs.

He called on the Ministry of Commerce and UMFCCI to create a proper market for crops, meat and fish. And, the private entrepreneurs should adopt and expand the contract farming system that can create capital markets for the farmers, he added.

He finally pledged that the commission members would work with ministries concerned with conducting supportive measures for the agriculture and livestock sectors.

Commission Vice-Chair Union Minister U Min Naung reported on the duties of the commission and, the formation of further committees, and attendees coordinated the discussion.
