THE National Road Safety Council needs to make further efforts for road safety measures under the visions and action plans of the National Road Safety Action Plan (2021-2030) drawn for the second decade, Chairman of the National Road Safety Council Vice-Chairman of the State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win was quoted as saying at the first meeting of the council at the Ministry of Transport and Communications in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.
In his speech, the Vice-Senior General highlighted that road accidents kill some 1.3 million people throughout the world, leaving over 50 million people injured on a yearly basis, according to the Global Status Report on Road Safety (2018), adding 18.2 per cent of 100,000 global people die of road accidents, most of whom live in Africa and Southeast Asia. The road accident stands eighth in the chart of the root causes of death for humans and first for deaths of people between aged 5 and 29 years, he added.
The Vice-Senior General noted that the majority of global countries face 3-5 per cent loss of their GDP in road accidents. He continued to say that the Global Ministerial Road Safety Conference released the Moscow Declaration in November 2009. Hence, he said the United Nations adopted the Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011- 2020) based on the Moscow Declaration. Meanwhile, ASEAN countries adopted the ASEAN Regional Road Safety Strategic Plan. This being so, Myanmar is implementing the National Road Safety Action Plan (2014- 2020).
Article 3.6 of the Sustainable Development Goals mentions arrangements for the reduction of 50 per cent loss of lives in road accidents. Hence, Myanmar will participate in the implementation process as a dutiful country.

The Vice-Senior General stressed the need to study the 7s Implementation Framework with Strategy, Structure, Skills, Shared, Systems, Staff, and Style for road safety measures. The vision of the council: Towards Zero Together will come true, if people individuals follow the road safety measures, if all vehicles are in good condition and if all the roads are safe.
Vice-Chairs of the council Union Ministers Lt-Gen Soe Htut and Admiral Tin Aung San discussed the national road safety measures.
Secretary of the council Director-General of Road Transport Administration Department U Zaw Min Oo reported on annual reports of the council in 2021 and action plans for the 2022-2023 financial year, and tasks underway and future tasks of the council.
The meeting discussions were joined by the chairman of Nay Pyi Taw Council, Union Ministers and officials. The Vice-Senior General negotiated the discussions and gave a concluding remark.
