UNION Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung invited discussions from those from coffee-based businesses to enhance coffee production, reaffirming government’s plan to support coffee growers and manufacturers in a meeting in Ywangan Township, Southern Shan State, on 31 August.

The Union minister said coffee produced in Myanmar wins market shares in overseas market as an organic product. Coffee is one of the prospectus export commodities and the government is providing necessary supports that may benefit all involved in the production chain of coffee. The government plans to provide supports to boost production of coffee from Ywangan Township.

Chairman of the Danu Self-Administered Zone in Shan State (South) U Arkar Lin discussed measures to recruit quality strains of coffee, to obtain the permit to use land, to manufacture agricultural inputs locally, to obtain agricultural water, to transfer coffee growing and manufacturing techniques and explained the prospects of expanding coffee farming within the region.

Then the Director-General of the Department of Agriculture shared the knowledge about the factors that contribute to the production and quality of coffee and the Director-General of the De partment of Irrigation and Water Utilization Management presented about the exposing fresh water resources and agricultural water management. The director of the Department of Agricultural Land Management and Statistics discussed land utilization under the existing laws. The Union minister also visited Coffee Technological Development Farm (Ywangan) operated by the Department of Agriculture, private coffee farms, the shops selling coffee-based products and coffee nurseries.

In Aungban Township, the Union minister inspected functions of a research centre on distribution of quality strains of potatoes, production of healthy potato strains, research on highland paddy, wheat, soya bean, canola, niger and maize species and conducting research on propagation of potatoes based on tissue-culture techniques.
