The International Women’s Day ceremony took place at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.

The ceremony was attended by the Chairperson of the Myanmar National Committee on Women (MNCW) and the Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and his wife, members of the Myanmar National Committee on Women (MNCW) and their wives, the Deputy Ministers who are members of the National Committee on Prevention and Response to Sexual Violence in Conflict and their wives, the Chairperson and his wife of the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory Women’s Committee, department heads, along with chairpersons and vice chairpersons of women’s organizations.

Union Minister Dr Soe Win first said that out of the world’s population of over eight billion by 2025, over four billion (49.73 per cent) will be women. According to last year’s figures, 612 million women and girls have been affected by armed conflicts around the world. In line with the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), it is necessary to promote women’s participation in all political, economic, social, and cultural sectors. It is also crucial to provide education and assistance to reduce and eliminate violence against women to promote women’s development.
A 24-hour helpline, “1566”, has been established for women to report violence and access social services. Women are encouraged to embrace science and technology to advance women’s rights and empower themselves, in keeping with the theme “For all Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment”. We must also strive to improve women’s education, employment, leadership, and decision-making, as well as to increase their involvement in engineering and mathematics.

Next, a message from the UN Secretary-General and a video recording were shown about the activities of women’s organizations that are members of the Myanmar National Women’s Committee. Following this, the participants of the International Women’s Day ceremony toured the women’s schools and viewed the products of women’s organizations on display.
