A PhD candidate from King’s College London in England recently attended the 22nd Zawti Shan novitiation and ordination ceremony in Mohnyin Twonship in Kachin State.
“There is little Western literature that focuses solely on the Zawti and as a result, the tradition has sometimes been misunderstood,” said Ms Olivia Porte, a PhD student at King’s College London.
“My PhD thesis focuses on Shan Buddhism and I am particularly interested in the Zawti tradition,” said the visiting research scholar at Shan State Buddhist University.
She also attended the Sang Long ordination ceremony in Mohnyin.
“I am very grateful to be in Mohnyin at this auspicious time. Everyone has been very friendly and welcoming and very generous with their time.There is so much to learn about the Zawti tradition. I am very happy to have been able to attend this ordination ceremony,” said Ms Olivia.
The week-long religious ceremony started on 2 February.
