THE 2023 World Heart Day commemoration ceremony took place at Nay Pyi Taw's Wunna Theikdi Gymnasium B yesterday. During the event, Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win addressed the audience, highlighting the glob­al impact of heart and cardio­vascular diseases, which claim over 20.5 million lives annually. He emphasized that unhealthy lifestyle choices such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and excessive al­cohol consumption contribute to 85 per cent of these deaths, primarily due to sudden cardi­ac arrest, cerebral ischemia, cerebral haemorrhages, and strokes.

CONCERNING the application filed by the Gambia at the International Court of Justice alleging Myanmar of violating the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the Gambia filed its Memorial to the Court on 23 October 2020 and Myanmar filed its Counter-Memorial on 24 August 2023 accordingly. In this connection, Myanmar was informed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that the President of the Court will receive the Agents of the Parties to discuss the subsequent procedure in the case on 26 September 2023 at the International Court of Justice, The Hague. The Myanmar delegation led by U Ko Ko Hlaing, Agent of Myanmar and Union Minister at the Office of Union Government 2, and Dr Thida Oo, Alternate Agent of Myanmar and Union Minister for Legal Affairs and Union Attorney-General, travelled to the Netherlands to attend the meeting with the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
