THE Food Safety and Environmental Health Research Conference, organized with the support of the Mekong-Lanchang Special Fund (2022), was held yesterday at the MGallery Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw. This conference is part of the project to establish a network for pesticide residue analysis and technological information for the Mekong-Lanchang region (Myanmar, Thailand, and China). The project also aims to create a laboratory for pesticide residue analysis and build research capacity within the region.
Attendees included Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation Dr Tin Htut, U Bo Bo Kyaw, officials from the Myanmar Embassy in the People's Republic of China, the rector of Yezin Agricultural University, faculty members, and invitees.
In his opening speech, Dr Tin Htut highlighted that, with the support of the Mekong-Lanchang Special Fund (2022), the project will establish pesticide residue laboratories based on existing buildings. This initiative will also involve collaborative research, staff training, and the development of expertise in pesticide residue management. He emphasized that the project would enhance the research capabilities of Myanmar's academic community and contribute to establishing a platform for pesticide residue analysis, benefiting Myanmar's minimum residue levels (MRLs) strategy.
The conference also discussed the environmental impact of pesticide residues, strategies for reducing pesticide contamination in food, and ways to monitor and assess the health risks associated with pesticide residues. The conference will help improve food safety standards for both domestic and export markets.
The rector of Yezin Agricultural University clarified the objectives of the conference, and an official from the Myanmar Embassy in China delivered a congratulatory speech. The conference continued to focus on the connections between food safety and environmental health.
