Tatmadaw successfully carried out its first liver transplant operation on 27 and 28 September 2022, treating two patients.
Subsequently, three transplant procedures were performed in 2023 for nine patients, and another nine patients received successful transplants in 2024.
Currently, the eighth series of liver transplant procedures is underway, involving three patients. On the first day, the procedure was conducted at the Special Treatment Centre of the Tatmadaw 1,000-bed Hospital in Mingaladon Township yesterday.
This liver transplant was conducted collaboratively by the Tatmadaw liver transplant team and their counterparts from India. The procedure involved Corporal Nay Lin Oo as the recipient and Sayadaw U Manita as the donor.
The liver was retrieved from the donor at 9:30 am and the transplant it into the recipient was completed at around 5 pm, taking approximately 11 hours in total. Both the donor and recipient are in good health following the surgery and are under close monitoring at the intensive care unit, receiving necessary treatment from specialists, medical officers and trained nurses.
Senior Tatmadaw officials observed and encouraged the team during the operation. The remaining procedures will be carried out on 29 and 30 January, according to reports.
