The world’s rare bird species such as migratory water birds, forest birds and Himalayan vulture or Himalayan griffon vultures are residing in Kyetmauktaung dam and watershed area in Kyaukpadaung Township of NyaungU District, Mandalay Region, according to Nature and Wildlife Conservation Division of Mount Popa National Geopark.
“Currently, there are nearly 1,000 birds of over 20 species of migratory water birds and forest birds in Kyetmauktaung dam and its vicinity area. Migratory birds, especially, take shelter in our country and it is a sign of fine environment and habitats. It is such a pride and the bird watchers also like it in the ecotourism sector,” said Senior Forester U Kyaw Naing Oo.
The migratory birds like lesser whistling duck, spot-billed duck, Podiceps nigricollis, heron, Eurasian coot, egret species, ruddy shelduck, Jicanas and other water birds are living in the Kyetmauktaung Dam and watershed area whereas the arrivals of lesser whistling duck are the highest. Among them, Himalayan vultures, yellow-breasted bunting and 15 other bird species are found.
“The forest birds are found in the fields of the upper part of the Kyetmauktaung Dam. If we conserve these birds, there might be arrivals of other unique bird species in coming years. The Himalayan vultures are world rare species and we see them this year,” he continued.
Eighteen seasonally protected bird species, 49 normally protected bird species and 30 totally protected bird species are spotted in the Kyetmauktaung Dam and Mount Popa National Geopark.
